View approaching Skagway

The train ride to Skagway provided amazing scenery and it was difficult to imagine crossing that terrain from Skagway to Whitehorse before a train or road was available. The first photo is the deep ravine that the train followed and the second shows how it would occasionally flatten out by the lakes in the valleys. In the third photo you can see coming from the left side across the picture the bus road and, if you enlarge the picture, just about the middle of the picture is the image in the rocks of an old man. He seems to be watching across the mountains. The fourth shows the train on the far left, the deep ravine, and in the far distance Skagway harbor. The last shows the train route toward the front, the bus route along the right mountain and the harbor in the distance. It was a beautiful trip and sometime a bit intimidating with the train right at the edge of the cliffs. Many details were pointed out that dealt with the travel of the Yukon gold stamped in 1898 where they had to come into Skagway and then cross the mountains to the Yukon territory. They were desperate people.
