Starting the Dempster Hwy to the Arctic Circle

July 11 we left Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, to trek to the edge of the Arctic Circle. It is a about 250 miles along thegravel, dusty Dempster Highway. The early part of the trip was rugged but pleasant. Not far down the road we spotted Mr. Grizzly feeding roadside; later the moose crossed the road and moved into the trees where Ken barely got a photo. See if you can find him looking at us from the trees. There were numerous species of flowers that were just beautiful so we finally stopped to get a photo of the fireweed. Of course we stopped at a few of the creek and river crossings to give Ken a chance to fish and to wander around a bit. The mosquitoes were a bit annoying. More astonishing was the 2 game wardens who stopped to check our license etc. Out in the middle of nowhere along an isolated 250 mile gravel road, with no exits, these guys showed up. We think they were grateful to see someone to talk to and to question, and to do their job. We were legal and enjoyed visiting with the one who actually came down to the creek.
