A Most Excellent Adventure 3 Teenah Lake bear patrol

July 3, when we reached Lake Teenah, Bernard our pilot showed Ken the details of the camp while I visited with Bernard's parents and owners, a family place, who had flown in to clean and organize the camp. On the shelf by the door they kept several cans of bear spray and an emergency high frequency radio, our only means of communication. (We only got static.) Bernard's mother, Eva, assured me that they had never actually seen a bear, but every year they saw new bear signs in the camp area. Eva said she rarely left the cabin without a can of bearspray if she was there by herself. If there were lots of people and noise the bears would stay away. Even to the privy or washroom, she carried the spray. Bernard's dad asked Ken if he wanted to keep the shotgun. Since they suggested it, we did. As a result, we, I especially, talked loudly a lot to the bears as we trekked to the privy behind the cabin. From the picture you will see, yes, there is no door to the privy. I didn't really carry the shotgun, but did carry the spray and kept Ken on alert at the window. I relaxed a bit the second day.

  1. OK- I'd be a little antsy about trekking around myself. What an experience! What a prompt for writing: Well, officer... I'd taken the bear spray with me to the outhouse to do my business when...
