Dempster Highway traveling conditions

July 11 we started up the 250 miles of gravel Dempster Highway which seemed to go forever and ever. The highway wound between mountains, across long open empty spaces and along the tops of the ridges of numerous mountains. The first photo shows in top right corner the faint image of the road and as we topped each new ridge it became disheartening to see the road along the top of a ridge 4 mountains over knowing that was where you would eventually be. Traffic was not an issue. Also in the first photo on the left you can see a puff of dust. No one but us and an occasional 18 wheeler and you always knew when you were going to meet one. The dust left an easy sign to follow and the meeting could be intimidating as you can see in photos 2 and 3. We pulled over to the side if we could when we met the big trucks to give them room. They never slowed down. There were beautiful sections where the gorgeous fireweed lined the roadway for miles on end as if you were approaching some beautiful homesite. We made occasional stops at the roadside rest areas and were met only with ravenous mosquitoes and Ken bundled up and hid from them as best he could. Notice the low barren hills behind him at this rest stop. Enlarge the photos to see the details.
