from Whitehorse Pass from Skagway

July 9, we took a bus and train trip to Skagway, Alaska. The train took us through White Horse Pass, the toughest route the gold rush stampeders had to face in coming to the Yukon in 1898. You can see in two of the pictures parts of the actual trail they had to follow on foot with 1 ton of supplies for a year. The other pictures show the kinds of obstacles along the trail. The trail was line with people making numerous trips to cart their supplies across the pas until they could reach the river on the other side to float their things to Dawson City. There were some beautiful scenes but I can't imagine crossing this on foot and most of it was in winter because of the timing. One of the pictures shows there is still snow along the small creek and the others are rushing water and rock slides. During this time, over 3,000 horses and mules died along one stretch of the trail and it is now called Dead Horse Pass.
